JK Merry Christmas!

We now return you to our regularly scheduled posts.
AOD Advent Calendar Day 17: Trailer Dump
A few trailers that have come out recently are the kind of trailers that definitely get posted to this site.
First up, is the new trailer for Man of Steel, the Superman reboot from Director Zach Snyder. A good Superman story strikes a balances putting Superman in a situation where his otherworldly power is on full display and showing his personal struggle with being the ultimate outsider and the people’s champion at the same time. From what I can tell, this definitely looks like the people involved in putting this movie together understood that. That said, the Watchman trailer looked good, too, and any fan of the graphic novel can tell you that movie missed the point entirely. Still, I’m cautiously optimistic about this retelling of the Superman story.
Next is Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Here is a trailer that made me laugh. Unfortunately, it’s not a comedy. I actually really like Guillermo Del Toro and Idris Elba, but I don’t think I’ll be paying full price for this one. Some ideas are just too dumb for great director and actors to fix. This may be one of those things. Pacific Rim looks like a movie I will be seeing at the theater with $3 tickets two months after it comes out. My words cannot do justice to the absurdity seen in this trailer. Don’t get me wrong. It looks fun. It just looks like the kind of dumb fun you keep to yourself unless someone asks about it.
Finally, we have Star Trek In To Darkness. This is the follow up to 2009′s Star Trek that rebooted the series and set the familiar characters down a new timeline. While I’m excited to see their story continue, I’m most excited about Benedict Cumberbacht─you may know him better as Holmes from Sherlock─ as the villain.
AOD Advent Calendar Day 16: Robb Pratt’s Superman Classic
Here are Superman Classic and the followup Superman Classic: Bizzaro. They are both a little short but very charming.
AOD Advent Calendar Day 15: Meet the DIY tank
Necessity is the mother of invention.
I first saw this clever creation on BoingBoing. It’s called the Sham II and it’s a tank made by Syrian rebels using a truck chassis and some other clever bits. War is a terrible thing, but the ingenuity that comes out of war is often fascinating.
AOD Advent Calendar Day 13: A reminder to be excellent to each other
It’s a great time of year to give to charity and volunteer. Here are a few organizations that can turn your donation in to help for people who need it.
The International Society of Red Cross and Red Crescent
The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research
The Humane Society of the United States
Please don’t let the suggested donation amounts scare you off. Every little bit helps.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the MJ-12 conspiracy theory. Don’t get too excited. It’s almost certainly a hoax.

AOD Advent Calendar Day 10: ‘Dark Knight Rises’ in a shorter, more honest format

Liking something doesn’t protect it from mockery, and as much as I enjoyed Dark Knight Rises, there was definitely plenty to laugh at. Here is my favorite Cracked post of the year: “If ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Was 10 Times Shorter and More Honest”.
Enjoy!
AOD Advent Calendar Day 9: The best gift idea
I recently moved to a very walkable area. Generally, I park my car on Friday, not moving it again until Monday morning when I go to work, but before I moved, things were different. Living in an area that always forces you to drives means being very mindful of your blood alcohol level. Being 25, I hear lots of stories about a friend or a friend of a friend getting a DUI. That’s why I highly recommend getting someone a breathalyzer this year.
That may sound like a crappy gift, like dental floss at Halloween, but if you dig deeper, I think you can make the case that it’s the perfect gift. Sure, it keeps people safe by providing information that can help the people you care about make potentially life saving decisions, but it’s also something that can help people have more fun. Think about it. Wouldn’t you be a whole lot less worried if you knew your blood alcohol level? Wouldn’t that take a lot of pressure off after a couple pints with friends?
You don’t want your friends or family members to end up like this guy or worse.

I’m not endorsing this specific model because I don’t know anything about it. I just know that it was the most breathalyzer-looking breathalyzer that I saw after 3 seconds of Google Images.
